Tendayi Achiume, rapporteur racism and xenophobia of the United Nations (UN) denounces the burqa ban and police in the Netherlands and praises the “abolition” of Zwarte Piet. She finds the burqa ban discriminating, just like the behaviour of Dutch police. The Zambian is happy with the “dialogue” about Zwarte Piet. At the same time, the Netherlands also has a message for the UN: women’s representative Clarice Gargard argues for “system change” to improve the position of women.
Achiume on Monday said during a press conference in The Hague: “The government has not done enough to fight against explicit and subtle forms of intolerance and discrimination against ethnic and religious minorities,” . According to her, the most salient example is “normalizing Islamophobic sentiments.” She refers to the ban on face-covering clothing that came into effect on 1 August.
